It is hard to believe that a full year has gone by and it is time to celebrate the 1-Year Anniversary of the Home in Harmony Book!

In a culture that is often focused on what is ahead it is important to pause and reflect on where have been, where you are and how far you have come or how much you have grown.

4 Simple Clutter Tips

Clutter Pic-sunset.comAre you having trouble with clutter in your home, mind or business? I am constantly asked how to remove the chaos of clutter.

It seems that you and I are inundated with a barrage of things coming at us. These can be items in a store or on TV that are enticing or information on the web that piles up and clutters the mind. This inundation creates a sense of overwhelm and confusion. Whether it is items that tax the brain or clog the closet, this clutter is a heavy burden to bear leaving you feeling encumbered and depleted.

Let’s look at a few simple solutions to move you out from under the overload of stuff!

 

  • First realize that clutter taxes your mind, body & spirit. Initially the clutter that is clogging you closet or congesting your inbox is annoying and frustrating. This is when you are consciously aware of the clutter. It creates stress that impacts your mood, your ability to focus and sends stress hormones racing through your body. These are a few of the reasons why it is critical to tame the disarray. Unfortunately as the clutter lingers, our conscious angst begins to move to an unconscious annoyance that continues to fester and impact mind, body and spirit. You might be able to put the clutter on the backburner of your priority list and it might even begin to fade into the background of your consciousness. Unfortunately that just means it has shifted to your unconscious, which is still sabotaging your mood, ability to focus and triggering your stress hormones. This is the why behind the importance to tackle the disorder. Now let’s look at what you can do about it.
  • Whether it is your closet or computer, it will help you to start with a Simple Strategy. Having a go forward game plan will help keep you on track. Start by breaking the task up into categories that you will tackle each day or week. If it is the closet name all of your categories, such as pants, skirts, long sleeve shirts, etc. If it is your computer do the same, perhaps it is work emails, personal emails, kids schedules, etc.
  • Now that you have named your categories, place the items that are categorized together in the same area. Simple, right?
  • For the next 14 days, focus on 1 category each day and remove 1 to 2 items and send them off to a good cause or the trash bin of cyberspace. Each day pick a new category to focus on rotating through all of the categories. This will help to make the process of clearing the clutter manageable in your mind and actionable each day.

I was recently working with a client who was told that she should take everything out of her closet and dump it on the floor. She should then go through the massive pile.  I don’t know about you, but she & I agreed that this seemed like an overwhelming task to wrap one’s mind around.  Breaking this process down into tiny actionable steps allows the process to flow with ease and grace rather than leaving you feeling even more overwhelmed.

Summer to Fall Transition Tips

Photo from fineartamerica.comIt is hard to believe that we are at the end of August! I can feel the shift in the air with the nighttime breezes cooler than just a few weeks ago. This past weekend we entertained friends and enjoyed a beautiful bonfire on the beach but needed to huddle close to the flickering of dancing flames to stay warm. School supplies and schedules are at the forefront of the kid’s minds while calendars are already filling up with activities for the coming months. Can you feel the changes as we slide into Fall? In this weeks article let’s look at some Simple Solutions to help you make the transition from one season to the next.

I love everything about summer! Dancing waves, turquoise water, runs on the beach, watching surfers gracefully ride, lobster rolls, sleeping in, paddle boarding, yoga on the beach, bonfires, s’mores, relaxed time, romantic getaway adventures, cuddles with the kids, cards and games, entertaining friends.. my list could go on and on. I love the pace of summer with its relaxed and meandering cadence. As the end begins, I know that I need to have Simple Solutions in place to help gracefully navigate the accelerated pace that naturally comes with the season ahead.

If I allow it, my mind begins to swirl and twirl thinking about the to-do list that is beginning to grow. The sensation is magnified from thoughts of back to school clothes, shoes, classroom supplies, dorm necessities, senior portraits, college essays and applications, move-in days, soccer, field hockey, dentist appointments, client schedules, book tours and speaking engagements. Yikes! I understand the need to find calm in the midst of chaos of modern day living!

1. Stop the Swirl

You have heard me say this before but it is important to repeat! Stop the swirl and twirl by taking out a pencil and write down what needs to be done. Get it out of your head and on to a piece of paper. This is super effective! You will feel so much better from this little strategy!

2. Big Yucky Things

Now that you have your list, go through it and decide which ones you do NOT want to do. Which items seem too big or yucky to do?  Which ones are holding you back? Becoming consciously aware of what items are challenging you and why, will help you to move through the obstacle they create.

3. Take Action

Take action and complete the worst ones first! If you are dreading something specific… do this 1st!  This tactic will help to alleviate the weighty feeling that a list can create! Once you tackle one dreaded item, notice how you feel. This will help to make the other items on your list so much easier to complete!

Finding calm in the midst of chaos during the shift from summer to fall is important for your overall sense of well-being. Using these Simple Solutions will help you gracefully navigate the tumultuous tides of transition.
