How Your Home Can Help You Meet the Demands of Fall

Beacon Hill Bookcase

Beacon Hill BookcaseRecently I was asked if I could elaborate on what I mean when I speak of the importance of de-cluttering one’s home.  Overtime and through the course of participating and teaching many classes I have found that when a question comes up for one individual, many people can benefit from hearing the response.  So, today I am going to answer the question of one in hopes that it will benefit many. Fortunately, this is the perfect time to take a look at clutter with the transition of summer to fall.

Most people have been taught that the New Year begins in January with confetti, champagne and fireworks. For me, I have always thought of the beginning of the new school year as a fresh start of time and place.  Even the years where I was not tied to the physical constraints of the school cadence I found the rhythm of changing winds made an internal shift at my core.  The summer was a time of freedom, play and relaxation followed by the crisp breezes that brought structure and a roused sense of determined action.  Sea and sand exchanged for activity and to-do lists. One way I was able to maneuver gracefully in the changing winds was to organize my place, and clear my space in preparation for what was to come. This preparedness action is similar to prepping for a tumultuous incoming storm.  It can give you clarity and energy to meet the demands of the natural momentum of the season ahead.

Your home influences your ability to move with effortless grace through each day.  Creating an organized, clutter free space gives you a sanctuary that nurtures you and supports you for expansion and clarity.  This foundation allows you to go out into the world and soar.

The trick to clutter clearing is to take small steps that will have a big and lasting impact.  The last thing you want to do is embark on too big a task and stop before you’ve reached the finish line because of overwhelm.  Similarly, you don’t want to only finish one area and lack the motivation to move to other areas.  Begin small and allow the momentum of manageable achievements motivate you. When I suggest small, I really mean small.  A drawer or closet is a great option. When you are finished with that first area notice how you feel. Perhaps lighter as if a weight was removed from your shoulders?

That’s the thing with clutter, it becomes a heavy burden that you carry with you whether you are in your home or not. It drains your energy as you ruminate over the clutter whether you are staring at it in the closet, or thinking about it from your work desk.  Taking action and beginning to clear the weight will free you from the heaviness that clutter creates in your life. Think about the last time you cleaned your room and how great you felt after. Imagine that feeling every time you walk in or out your home.

Taking the time now before we transition to Fall can help you navigate the cool winds of change without the cumbersome weight that clutter creates.  This will allow smooth sailing as you prepare to meet the demands of the season to come.

Create Harmony in Your Home

63_CedarRoad__MudRoomPhotoMost people don’t realize that their home has a major impact on their overall sense of well-being. Did you know that your home affects your sense of calm and harmony, your health and your outlook on life?  It actually has the power to influence your moods, hormones and body chemistry and that plays a big role on your level of satisfaction in life, ability to find calm in the midst of chaos and whether you enjoy great health!

Every room is important but the mudroom plays a key role in your level of calm and harmony. It is the last impression you have of your home when you leave & it is the first area you see when you enter. You either walk in and with a sigh of relief, think,  “Ah, I’m home”.  Or you see the all-consuming clutter (meaning it consumes your physical & mental space) and that drains your energy.  This sets the tone for a good portion of your day.  Many people have confided that it makes them feel cranky to walk into a disorganized clutter filled mudroom or entryway. If you are one of the many it is time to make changes.  You want to create a space that nurtures you instead of depleting your vitality.

Let’s look at a few simple solutions to help this space be great:

The first simple solution is to make it a clutter free zone.  Everything in the space should have a place.  Everything (period). If it doesn’t have a spot, either remove it or find a designated destination. This is actually easier than it sounds! Let me explain…

Studies have shown that more than 85% of our behavior is habitual. That means that much of our daily activity is repetitive, going-through-the-motion type of behavior. When we take a morning shower, you aren’t thinking about each step in the process.  Rather, you move through the shower in a habitual daze that allows you to plan the day ahead.  This is the brain’s innate ability to shift into an autopilot mode when mindless tasks are at hand. This helps to conserve your brain’s energy and need to focus on more important stimuli (like making sure you are safe). You can use this natural mechanism to your advantage to clear clutter and create an organized space where everything ends up in it’s place.

If you create an organized space where everything has a place there’s no need to put effort into thinking about where to put something or where to find it when you are rushing out the door. Unfortunately, on the days that you become stressed from misplaced items, your cortisol levels increase, which can create a whole myriad of health issues if not kept in check. When you begin your day off-quilter a negative momentum can spiral out of control effecting all other parts of your day.  So, let’s look at ways you can train your brain to help create organized outer and inner calm.

Labels are a great reminder of where specific items go.  They help to train your subconscious to put things in their designated place and create a habitual autopilot response. Color-coding baskets has the same outcome.  Each color can have a particular item associated with it or a specific person who is assigned that color. This is especially great for children!

The second solution is bringing beauty into your space. Creating an aesthetically pleasing environment effects how much you smile. Studies have shown that when we are surrounded by beauty it triggers our happy hormones. Making your mudroom beautiful will leave you smiling as you exit or enter.

One way to bring beauty into your space is the use of color. We are all unique individuals and the colors you love might be different from the colors that make me happy. Begin to notice which colors make you smile. Different ways to add color include fabric for pillows or window treatments or using rugs. Find fun colors, textures and patterns that make your heart sing!

The third solution is including something inspiring or uplifting in your mudroom. This is going to be different for everyone. Remember, it is the last space you see before you go out into the world and the first place you see when you return home.  An inspiring saying, picture or object can help you focus on what you want out of life. It can be a family motto or slogan, a piece of art that reminds you of something special in your life. It works on a conscious and unconscious level to help you set an intention for your day and your life.

These simple Home in Harmony Lifestyle Solutions will help you create a home that supports and nurtures your mind, body & spirit.  What one thing on this list are you going to do today to begin designing your inspired life?

Build With Intention

Birds NestWhen I opened my front door today a bird flew out of the wreath hanging on the side of the house.  I suggested to my daughter she take a look inside the wreath to see if there was anything interesting to see.  As I had suspected, she exclaimed that there were two tiny blue eggs nestled into a nest among the silk flowers! We all climbed up on the front porch bench to get a bird’s eye view inside the home that the mama bird had created for the two blue miracles that lay inside. The sweet scene reminded me of the blessings of my own family and home that I nurture and cherish with all my heart.  It made me think of how I love to share ways for you to make your home a nest that will support you and those you nurture to help you meet the day ahead and fly to new heights.

One of the main focuses of Home in Harmony Lifestyle is to create a home environment that is truly your nest.  Similar to a mama bird creating her nest with the sole intention of building a space that is safe and secure to lay her eggs and allow her hatchlings to survive, thrive and eventually fly, I want to share insights that will help you build your nest so that you can soar.  Let’s look at one easy lifestyle solution that can create a huge impact.

Your home either supports and nurtures your life goal’s or they deplete you of your energy which does not allow you to thrive or fly. The first step in creating a supportive space is to decide what you most need from your home and name it or set your intention.  If you are a writer and envision a peaceful sanctuary your intentions are going to be different from a family with active children. Setting your intention for the space allows you to stay focused on what exactly you are trying to create. Naming the intention allows you to visualize what aligns with your intention and what is incongruent. This allows you to walk around your home and determine what things should stay or go based on your vision. This is also true when finding new items to bring into your home. Ask yourself, does this support my intention which supports my overall goals and needs?

I recently read an article about Rob Lowe in Architectural Digest. He explained how he and his wife decided what type of environment they wanted to create for their family home in California before they began the design process. This allowed them to create a space that was congruent with their overall family needs, life vision and hopes for their home. They chose to make their grande house feel like a comfortable, child friendly oasis that welcomed kids and dogs to run free. By thoughtfully examining, deciding and naming what they needed from their home they were able to create a home that best supported their vision and intentions for the family.

Quick Tips to Create Your Nest!

Name it & Claim it

First, name the intention for your home that will best support you on your journey and allow you to fly. Take some time to think about what most inspires you. Make a list of activities that you love to do at home and begin to create the space into a foundation of consistent encouragement and inspiration. Maybe each room has it’s own special purpose. Name it and claim it for each room and for the space overall.

Evaluate & Clear

Next, begin to evaluate the current space to determine what is in alignment and supports your intention and vision for your home and overall life. Clear those items or change the areas that do not support these goals. This means truly looking at the items in your space and consciously determining what types of memories each item holds.  If the memories are positive, inspiring and in alignment with your vision, by all means keep it to support you in your nest and life.  However, if the mementos, paintings or furniture have negative vibes from past experiences or negative people then it is time to let them go and make space for things that support you.

Evaluate & Align

When deciding on items to add to the space, choose things that are in alignment with the goal for your sanctuary and your overall big vision. Remember, less is more.  Adding things slowly and consciously is better than going to a big box store and finding items without meaning. Imagine what it would feel like for your overall sense of wellbeing if everywhere you looked in your nest, positive memories would bubble to the surface of your consciousness.

These simple steps will help you build a strong, supportive nest. This will allow you to survive, thrive and fly!

5 Ways to Feel Blessed Instead of Stressed During the Holidays

shapeimage_4The holidays can be a hectic time of year filled with social commitments, family obligations, to-do lists that are miles long and full of unhealthy indulgences that make you feel tired and overwhelmed.  Here are 5 tips to help you manage the holidays and allow them to flow with ease and be filled with grace.

1. Gratitude Journal

The first suggestion is to give yourself a few moments at the beginning of each day to write about a few things you are grateful for…maybe it is a loved one or special friend that fills you with gratitude or maybe it is a cozy cup of tea that warms your soul.  Whatever it is, write it down. Focusing our thoughts on what we are grateful for places our attention on something positive. The things we place our attention on in our lives expand.  By doing this each morning before we start our day helps to set the tone for the rest of the day bringing more experiences into our lives that will fill us with gratitude. Taking this time each morning to focus on the things that are truly important to us and fill us with gratitude allows us to be more aware of what is really important.

2.  Give to Someone in Need

The second suggestion is to take a moment to really give to someone in need.  I know it might seem counter intuitive to add something to your ever growing list.  If you are feeling exasperated by the notion of spending more time or money on another charity or person, let’s look at this a little closer.  In the past, as a family, we have given to many charities and written many checks.  Although these are important, I have found that it has really grounded me and the other family members to give when we have a better understanding of the people or person we are helping.  I want to feel that connection because it touches me at my core and makes me realize that my crazy schedule or commitments really are insignificant in the grand scheme of things.  I am blessed to be healthy and have people around me that love me.  When my children were young we had a wonderful woman who would come and help me around the house.  She was a beautiful soul who loved to watch my children play.  She and her husband had come upon hard times because he had been diagnosed with a severe form of Lou Gehrig disease. It was sad to watch this beautiful soul take on the weight of taking care of the man she loved and their financial situation that was now her responsibility. I knew that she loved to cook but couldn’t afford many of the healthier options and she was unable to prepare a big Christmas dinner that she had once enjoyed serving her family.  Our family decided that we wanted to give this beautiful soul the gift of a Christmas dinner and we would provide the ingredients for her to create her tradition for those she loved.  We surprised her at her home with loaded down with all of the fix-ins she would need… a turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, eggnog, cakes and pies and anything we could think of that would help this women and her family enjoy their Christmas Day.  Each year this tradition would help me to look outside of my own busy schedule and crazy circumstances which helped me look at the bigger picture in life.  It helped me to see and appreciate my blessings more clearly.  The gift we gave her each year was really a gift given to us. It made the idea tangible for my children that there really are people in the world who are suffering and we can be part of the solution. I would drive away from that home with tears streaming down my cheeks understanding that my to-do list was really insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

3.  Create a Priority List

Speaking of to-do lists.  If yours is a mile long, then it is time to sit down and examine, prioritize, structure and eliminate.  For this suggestion you will need a calendar to help structure your list.  First, go through your list and determine which items are the most critical and need to get done right away. Add these items to your calendar where they will get completed in the coming days.  Now go through the rest of your list and prioritize the rest of the items. Can you break some of the larger items into smaller parts.  For example, holiday shopping is too big a criteria.  Look at how you can make that big umbrella turn into smaller components. Christmas shopping can include, stocking stuffers, presents for friends, presents for the young kids, presents for the teenagers and food shopping.  Notice if there are items that can wait until after the holidays to lighten up your load. Now put the remaining items on your calendar to be completed on or by a specific day.  This will give you relief in knowing that you have a date scheduled to complete each item.  You don’t need to stress about when you are going to get it done because you know exactly when you are going to complete each task. Enjoy crossing the items off your calendar!

4. Set a Holiday Intention

I was inspired on my yoga mat today which brings me to my forth suggestion. The yoga instructor suggested that we set an intention for not only our class but for the day ahead. She also suggested that we choose an item that we look at often throughout the day, that could help remind us of our intention. I pondered on this for a bit realizing that this was a great way to bring our attention not only to our intention but to the here-and-now at any moment of any day. It made me realize that this idea was applicable and helpful for the holiday season. As I began to slowly exhale, my intention for the season began to surface  ~flow with ease~ As I took a deep breath in the second part of my intention emerged ~filled with grace~. I wear a special necklace that reminds me of my connection to the Infinite. During this season I intend to remember my Holiday Intention whenever I see my necklace or rub it with my fingers. This will ground me and act as a constant reminder that with this holiday season I am going to Flow with Ease and be Filled with Grace. What is your intention for this holiday season?

5. Take Care of Your Body

As we get caught up in the festivities and enjoy many social obligations we can eat rich sugar and fat laden foods, overindulge in drinks and deprive ourselves of sleep.  This coupled with the stressors that the holiday season can bring are a recipe for exhaustion, sickness and depression. Give your body the added boost and benefit of mindfully choosing healthy options to eat and drink.  If you know you are going to be in a situation where good healthful options are not going to present themselves, plan ahead.  Eat something healthy before you walk into that soiree.  When ordering drinks, ask for an extra splash of soda water or juice, and try having a glass of water between each cocktail.  It is important to keep your body hydrated so that you don’t turn to other things that your body really doesn’t need.  This will help you to eliminate extra calories, fat, salt, sugar and alcohol that can be so prevalent during a holiday party. Also, remember that our sleep is extremely important in keeping our bodies and minds feeling balanced, vibrant and healthy.

I hope these five suggestions will help you move through the holidays experiencing flowing ease in all areas of your life and filling your days with grace, joy and peace.

Happy Soaring!
